Welcome!

Thank you for visiting artful embellishments. This is the third year for this blog and I am so happy to keep publishing. I started in 2011 and began with a quilt of the week, this lead to the leaf of the week for my newly designed paper tree that is located on the wall of my garage in 2012.......2013 is going to bring a lot of excitement and positive change. As a personal challenge for 2013, I plan on designing a artist trading card each week to be featured on the blog.
With so many interests, there will be quilting, art quilting, leaves (and more leaves), as well as experiments in thermofax screen printing, fabric dying, and tons of DIY recycle projects. I may even enter that altered fashion scene. To a happy and healthy 2013, may we all find happiness in those things we create....thank you for stoping by artful embellishments.

Journal #3 Port of Cross Village

I have been remiss on the blog this month. I have a lot of excuses, but none of them good. So let's move onto the art!!! This was a project that I started last summer. I took an old atlas and turned it into a journal of sorts. I love mixed media! So I bought a book on painting and flipped to the beach pages to learn how to paint water and sand.

Nothing is more fun than the port of cross village in the summer. I spend most of my days there, and it was the place in which I took the picture of mike kyaking. See journal quilt 52! I used some vintage images of bathing beauties that I had received when taking a class by Claudine Hellmuth to add human figures. I added small starfish and a drink umbrella for 3 dimensional effect.

Eye Pocket

This eye pocket was done with some unique papers that I had found in my travels over the last few years. I used an old butterfly pin and glued small seed beads on it. I then used some butterfly confetti to the top to add dimension. An old tag was put at the top with the words "the scissors". I keep my prized scissors in this eye pocket!

Gift Tag #6 Floral pillows

This gift tag was made with images of floral pillows. They were fussy cut and adhered to a teal sparkle paper. A stamp was embossed across the center and decorative thread was woven threw the edges.

Journal Page #2

Journal page #2 was done using multiple layers of paint. The Leggs Inn is one of my favorite places in Northern Michigan. I used paint and then bubble wrap as a stamp. I then used alcohol inks to stain the chip board letters. Post cards from the restaurant are added to the page.

Journal Page #1

Journal Page #1 started with postcards from my favorite places in Northern Michigan. I took an old World Atlas. I started by glueing pages together to give thickness to each page. I then sewed the edges with my sewing maching. I painted the pages with different paints. I decoupaged various maps, ephemera, old book pages, and postcards. I added pattern pieces, tissue paper and finally stamps! Art Journaling is something I would like to add for 2012 to this blog!

Eye Pocket

What is an eye pocket? After crusing through the local thrift store, we noticed some leather eye cases. They have the clip on the back. I have some industrial metal shelving. After a coat of paint, decoupage, and embellishments the eye pocket was born. These decorative holders clip onto my industrial shelving and hold items that I frequently use!

Week 52 My Favorite Moment

Week 52 Journal Quilt! This is the final in my weekly series for 2011. I kept my new years resolution for 2011!!!! This journal quilt is slightly larger than the others for this year. I typically did 10" X 10". This one is 11" X 14". Quilting Arts Magazine had a "Time Flies" challenge. You were supposed to capture your favorite memory on a quilt. Last summer I was watching the sun set while mike was kayaking in on Lake Michigan. I snapped a picture with my camera. It was one of those fleeting perfect moments. It is hard to believe it was 5 months ago. I altered the picture in photoshop using the "posterize" function. I then used wonder under stabilizer to trace each of the color blocks. I stitched all of the pieces. I then used thread painting to enhance portions of the quilt. Lace was used for the waves and beads for the water droplets. May 2012 be full of many "perfect moments".
